National HMO Network Conference 2010
‘Getting On With It’
Our 2010 conference and AGM was hosted by Sheffield City Council at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel, Sheffield on Tuesday 12 October 2010 with the main conference sponsor being the National Landlords Association (NLA).
The conference focussed on the application of existing legislation and ‘getting on with it’.
Councillor Penny Baker, Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Planning welcomed delegates to Sheffield and spoke about the housing sector in Sheffield.

Analysis of the health benefits of the HHSRS – John Bryson, FCIEH, FRIPH
John is a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) who worked for Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Health and Housing Departments for many years before becoming a consultant. He has worked on various housing and regeneration projects for a number of local authorities and regeneration bodies. John has also worked for the University of Warwick providing training packages for professionals involved with the assessment of housing conditions and he has also assisted in a number of health and housing research projects.

LG Regulation – Re-licensing project – John Marr, Policy Officer, LG Regulation
John studied Law at the University of Aberdeen, and trained and worked as a solicitor for Scottish local authorities before moving to England 12 years ago. John joined LACORS in summer 2007 initially working on cross-cutting corporate policy. He joined the Private Sector Housing team in March the following year and currently works on areas which include mandatory HMO licensing, utility disconnections and empty homes.

Update on fire prevention for flats and maisonettes – Andy Cloke, Station Manager
Andy Cloke is Station Manager of Technical Fire Safety - Central Support at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue where he has served for over 25 years. Andy was a member of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 Technical Guidance Group and worked on the Sleeping Guide. He is currently on the Chief Fire Officers working party looking at the advice in BS5588 Part 1, relating to flats and maisonettes.

Update on the NLA Accreditation Scheme - Siobhan Cannon, NLA Local Government and Accreditation Officer
Siobhan Cannon worked alongside a number of local authorities to pilot NLA Accreditation and is now rolling it out on a national level. The scheme is based on landlord development (with an additional requirement for CPD), a code of practice, and complaints procedures. The scheme requires no fee from participating local authorities.
