Workshop A: Camden's experience of HMO management orders
This workshop was led by Rachel Fell from Camden and facilitated by Bill Page of Kensington and Chelsea. Camden have gained great experience in this area as they have made three interim management orders and two final management orders on properties.

Workshop B: The Government’s proposals for the Private Rented Sector
This workshop was led by Sally Blandford and Mary Stallebrass from the Private Housing Management Section within Communities and Local Government (CLG) and facilitated by Dave Webber from Kensington and Chelsea. The closing date for the consultation on the document The Private Rented Sector: Professionalism and Quality and HMOs and Possible Planning Responses was 7 August 2009. This workshop looked further at some of the proposals and offered delegates a chance to discuss the key issues.

Workshop C: How local authorities can successfully work with private landlords
This workshop was led by Dave Offord from the National Landlords Association and Michele Glazebrook of Glazebrook Associates Ltd and the National HMO Network Steering Group. The facilitator was Tim Davies, from Kensington and Chelsea. Providing a discussion about how local authorities and landlords can most productively work together the workshop considered issues arising from the enforcement by local authorities under the Housing Act 2004.

Workshop D: The duty to manage asbestos
This workshop was run by Chris Rawson from Asbestos Testing and Consultancy with the facilitator being Tim Bage from Wandsworth Borough Council. It looked at asbestos in the context of private sector housing looking at legislation, asbestos types and health risks, management of asbestos and process, the responsibility of the duty holder and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforcement policy.

Workshop E: Fire door inspection, maintenance and regulation
John Fletcher from the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) took this workshop which was facilitated by Daniel Wye from Wandsworth Borough Council. There was an in depth look at how fire doors, ironmongery and other components work, how to inspect, maintain and service fire doors and how the BWF Fire Door Accreditation Scheme operates. There was a discussion about competence, the role of responsible person and the role fire doors have played in recent fires.

Workshop F: Gas safety and installer registration
The London HSE Partnership and Capita jointly ran this workshop with presenters Andrew Verrall-Withers and Rob Denmam. The facilitator was Alison Pruden from Islington Council. It considered current HSE projects looking at recent interesting cases, prosecutions and gas safety awareness covering downstream gas safety, ventilation and safety. Capita spoke about where we are with the register and what their obligations are under the new contract.
