I have worked as an EHO in Birmingham since qualifying in 1977. Having spent the majority of this period working in private sector housing, I have gained a good deal of knowledge and experience of most of the associated legislative and practical procedures. During the 1980’s I was mainly involved in implementing the City’s improvement grant, area regeneration and clearance programmes however the enforcement and promotion of standards within the private rented sector has predominated since the early 1990’s.
More recently I have been involved in the development of procedures and policies in preparation for the implementation of the Housing Act 2004 and am currently HMO licensing manager in Birmingham. I am regularly involved in the training of staff with respect to the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, HMO licensing and associated enforcement powers.
I also provide training on private rented sector housing related issues to the MSC course in Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham, and my interests and strengths still lie in the practical side of service delivery
I have been a member of the Network’s Steering Group since 2005.
